El argentino Adolfo Bioy Casares, nacido en 1914, tiene en su haber una larga y consistente labor literaria finalmente reconocida al concedérsele el Premio Cervantes en 1990. En el presente volumen se ofrecen dos de sus obras más características, la novela «La invención de Morel» y la colección de cuentos cortos «El gran Serafín». En ellas se pueden apreciar los ejes sobre los que se mueve su producción literaria: como temas, lo fantástico y el sentimiento amoroso; como forma, el rigor intelectual y el humorismo, todo ello dominado por el intento de captar la realidad del mundo y las circunstancias humanas, aunque sea para subrayar paradójicamente su irrealidad.
